Victorian, Edwardian & Arts & Crafts houses

A generous bay, a deep porch or a gable with fine timber details gives a period house its own order. We develop the decorating brief around that individual architecture, with particular care over what is repaired, what is painted and what should be left alone.

Recognise the house before defining the finish

Merton's Wimbledon North assessment records substantial turn-of-century houses with Arts & Crafts influences, including gables, bays and porches. Its Hill Road assessment adds Victorian houses and later conversions to the hillside picture. For an individual home, those descriptions are a starting point for inspection. A surface schedule should identify the actual doors, windows, plasterwork and existing coatings instead of treating every period property alike.

Give consent questions a clear owner

Tell us about any conservation designation, listing, previous approval or proposed change to the exterior at the first discussion. Planning and listed-building consents, including proposals in conservation areas, are handled through our sister company, Hampstead Chartered Surveyors & Building Consultancy, with its professional scope agreed separately. The proposed preparation, repairs, colour and finish all need to be considered where they could affect protected fabric or appearance.

Keep fine details legible

Cornices, panel mouldings and narrow glazing bars can lose definition beneath poorly considered preparation or repeated heavy coatings. We discuss the condition of each feature, the finish to retain and the extent of preparation before specifying the repaint. Where a detail is damaged, its repair needs an agreed method and responsibility; a decorative coating is the final stage of that decision.

Compose the rooms as a house

A drawing room, a family kitchen and an upstairs bedroom need not share one colour to feel connected. Begin with the floors, fireplaces and furniture that will remain, then use samples to judge how adjoining spaces meet at doorways. Wall and joinery sheens deserve separate decisions. Record the accepted choices room by room so later work follows the same considered scheme.

Make room for the household and the building

Larger houses often need a sequence that links interior rooms with window access and exterior preparation. Identify the stair route, a secure place for materials and the spaces that must remain usable. We can discuss releasing one part of the house at a time, with clear inspection points before the household moves back and work transfers to the next area.
