Interwar houses & period conversions

An interwar family house and a flat within an older building have different decorating priorities. We assess the rooms and the building around them, keeping original details, later alterations and shared responsibilities visible in the proposed scope.

A broader picture of Wimbledon housing

Merton's South Wimbledon character guide describes Edwardian and interwar terraces, with gabled bays, porches and a mixture of external finishes. The Hill Road assessment records older houses adapted into flats on the descent towards the town centre. These are distinct settings for a repaint: the actual property and its retained features determine the brief, rather than an assumption that every Wimbledon home is a large detached house.

Set the palette against the features you retain

Consider a bay window, tiled fireplace or existing internal doors before choosing the wall colour. For an interwar house, the entrance and connecting rooms can carry a consistent scheme without flattening their individual proportions. Photograph any feature that needs protection and mark whether it will be cleaned, repaired or simply left untouched. Those decisions should appear alongside the surfaces to be repainted.

Make a conversion's different layers work together

A converted flat can contain high ceilings and older window joinery beside newer partitions or storage. Review the junctions as part of preparation, especially around altered doorways and fitted units. Samples help compare new surfaces with the retained fabric. Where cracking or staining has an unclear cause, establish the repair responsibility before treating it as a cosmetic item.

Distinguish a private interior from a shared building

In a conversion, establish who controls the entrance door, windows and shared hall before including them in the quotation. Ask the owner or building manager for access requirements and the relevant permissions for the proposed work. Plan protection along the carrying route and agree where equipment can stay within the flat, keeping shared circulation available for the other households.

Bring exterior decisions back to the whole elevation

For a house with an existing rendered or painted frontage, review the porch, bay and window colours together. For a flat, an individual window may form part of a larger elevation controlled by others. Both situations benefit from a clear photographic scope. Any conservation, listing or other restriction must be checked for the address before a changed treatment is approved.
